The New Storytellers
Transforming Human Society
Making the Story Real
Experiencing both the Earth and the Universe as living systems (of which we’re a part) has huge implications for knowing who we are and what we are here to do; this is an exploration by two brilliant thought-leaders which will help set the tone for the sessions that follow.
Duane Elgin, Wharton MBA and MA is an internationally recognized author, speaker and trans-partisan media activist. His books include Voluntary Simplicity, The Living Universe, Promise Ahead and Awakening Earth. He has done studies on the long-range future since the early 1970s while working as a social scientist on a Presidential Commission on the American Future. That was followed by diverse studies of the long-range future at the think-tank, SRI International.
In the 1980s, he was a media activist and community organizer, focusing primarily on the San Francisco Bay Area. Duane is the co-founder of three trans-partisan organizations working to use the new social media to give citizens a greater voice in the future. He received the Peace Prize of Japan, the Goi Award in Tokyo in 2006, in recognition of his contribution to a global “vision, consciousness, and lifestyle” that fosters a “more sustainable and spiritual culture.” His current work involves bringing together more than a dozen "Great Transition Stories" that offer new ways of understanding our time of profound global change.
Dr. David C. Korten is the author of Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth (August 2010), and The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community (2006). His previous books include the international best-seller When Corporations Rule the World and The Post-Corporate World: Life after Capitalism. Korten is board chair of YES! Magazine, co-chair of the New Economy Working Group, founded in late 2008 with the Institute for Policy Studies, a founding board member of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), founder and president of The Living Economies Forum and a member of the Club of Rome. He holds MBA and Ph.D. degrees from the Stanford Business School.
David has thirty years experience as a development professional in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and has served as a Harvard Business School professor, a captain in the US Air Force, a Ford Foundation Project Specialist, and a regional adviser to the US Agency for International Development. He lives with his life partner, Fran (Executive Director and Publisher of YES! Magazine) on Bainbridge Island, WA.
